"Gallic Rome" or one of the most beautiful cities in Provence with a magnificent historical and cultural heritage.

Arles is a charming small city stretching along the banks of the stormy Rhone River. Here, it is easy to immerse yourself in the unforgettable Provençal atmosphere: wander through cozy streets lined with stone houses, blue shutters, and flower-filled windows, discover hidden green squares nestled among the alleys, where charming cafes invite you to sit under the shade of large plane trees and feel the passage of time.

Arles is also known as the gateway to the Camargue Nature Reserve, where you can see the famous white Camargue horses, real salt mountains, and magical pink flamingos strolling along the edge of the amethyst-colored water.

Arles is best known for its structures built in the era of Ancient Rome, when it played a crucial role in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis. It was a grand fortified city, featuring an amphitheater, a triumphal arch, a circus, and a theater.

Today, the Roman and Romanesque monuments of Arles are included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, remarkably well-preserved, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience its Roman past.

Arles' history began long before the Romans arrived. The first settlement on the site of modern Arles dates back to 800 BC, when the Ligurians settled here. Later, the city became an important Phoenician port.

The Romans conquered the city only in 123 BC and named it Arelate. During the Roman Empire, Arelate became a cultural and religious center. Emperor Constantine I loved the city so much that he built luxurious thermal baths here, resembling a palace.

Of course, speaking about Arles, one should not forget that a great artist lived here – Vincent van Gogh. It was in Arles where he created many of his most famous works. Today, the city offers a Van Gogh trail, allowing visitors to explore the locations that inspired him.

We will follow it and visit the Van Gogh Center, housed in the former Hôtel-Dieu, the hospital where the artist was treated and where he painted one of his most renowned masterpieces, “The Courtyard of the Hospital in Arles”.

And after lunch, we will continue our journey to the tiny and unknown town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, which became famous all over the world as the place where Van Gogh spent a year receiving treatment at Saint-Paul-de-Mausole Hospital, his final refuge.

Come to visit and we will walk together through the most interesting and emblematic places of Arles, which were glorified by ancient Romans and inspired Van Gogh.
